The voice is an instrument inside your body and you have to learn how to use it to get the most out of it. It’s very “physical” on the foundational level. To have a strong voice and to have vocal consistency there are certain things you have to know and do. There are some really simple methods you can use, right now, to get a great sound out of your instrument.
1. Evaluate your voice
The best way to evaluate your voice skills is by recording your voice. By listening to your own samples, you can analyze the result with a critical ear. If you compare the takes every week you will notice progress. Having someone else to evaluate your voice is another way to go.
2. Train your voice and body just like an athlete
Discipline is as important as a voice talent, just like an athlete. Learn some techniques to improve your voice skills. Patience and timing are key in voicing, practice makes perfect.
3. Learn proper breathing
There are many exercises to do to help you breath properly when singing. You need to enhance your lung power. Train your vocal cords by changing the tone of your voice. Respect your vocal range, don’t imitate other voices.
The next time you sing an ascending vocal scale or you sing a high note, try thinking of the way an elevator works. A heavy weight is attached to a pulley and as the weight pulls down, the elevator actually goes up to the higher floors. So, the highest floor is reached when the weight is the heaviest. Similarly, you should think down for your high notes or think of adding weight (resistance) to your highest notes.
4. Adequate hydration
Water is the best lubricant for your vocal cords. Just drink plain water or non-caffeinated products to get proper moisture.
5. Set realistic goals
Set reasonable goals in term of voice style. Make sure you have different samples that respect your vocal range. Choose the vocal range that best suits your abilities and unique sound.
