1. Eliminate stress
Like crying or screaming, singing helps release feelings, like stress or sadness contained in the heart of the singer. Stress can sometimes be a result of things unsaid or expressions otherwise silenced. Singing can be a healthy way of expressing our deepest emotional pains.
The breathing necessary for singing is much deeper and more demanding than we use in our everyday activities. When you sing, activities of abdominal muscles stimulate and deepen the breathing, and help to relax and calm the mind. Deep breathing, as we know, helps to calm to heart, body and mind.
2. Optimistic
Instead of eating chocolate or using sedative pills to find balance in life, sing it up.
When singing, the brain stimulates endocrine glands to release a hormone called endorphin. This hormone is known as an anti-depressant weapon, and if this hormone is secreted regularly, it can help you to feel more energized and more excited.
3. Stimulate the respiratory system
In order to be able to sing long songs or choruses, we have to breathe from our belly and our core. This is a natural activity that we usually do when we are young, when we exercise, or when we sleep.
Yet over time, our instinct for breathing takes over and we breathe relatively shallow breaths. Singing allows us to breathe without much effort. Furthermore, the respiratory system works at full capacity as we breathe through our abdomen, so we breathe easier, take deeper breaths. This also means that we emit more toxic gases from the body, rid our bodies of stagnant energy, and provide more oxygen to the body.
4. Cure back pain
Just like the respiratory system, posture is also a very important to healthy singing. To be able to sing freely, we have to stand or sit straight, neck held high and relaxed shoulders. Any knots or posture issues can be addressed over time and the freer we sit/stand, the freer we sing and visa versa. Moreover, when singing, the vocal cords vibrate, diffuse into the body, especially in the spine, loosening tension in the muscles.
5. Strengthen the immune system
According to research by scientists at the University of Frankfurt in Germany, published in the latest edition of the US Journal of Behavioral Medicine, singing can boost the body’s immune system, thus helping the body fight off disease.
The scientists analyzed blood samples of members of a choir before and after a 60-minute rehearsal of Mozart’s Requiem. The results showed that concentrations of immunoglobin A, proteins in the immune system which function as antibodies and hydrocortisone, an anti-stress hormone, in the blood of these people increased significantly during the rehearsal. A week later, when they asked the same people to listen to a recording of the Requiem without singing, they found the composition of their blood did not change significantly. The researchers, who included Hans Guenther Bastian from the Institute of Musical Education at Frankfurt University, concluded singing not only strengthened the immune system but also lifted the performer’s mood.
6. Remove wrinkles
No need to use botox or facial contour at cosmetology centers, sing it up if you want your skin always fresh.
Singing allows our skin to be firmer, not only on the lips but also on the cheeks, chin and forehead. This is actually an effective exercise against the “degradation” of facial skin and increase the elasticity of the skin.
Singing is not only a way of expressing our mind but also a way to improve our health. So we should sing a lot to make life more colorful.
